Dog Lovers - a walk on the beach, then relax with a drink and some food

With miles of beautiful beaches, Suffolk is a great place for a walk along the coast.  Many beaches and pubs welcome dogs. All the pubs mentioned here have open fires in cold weather. From October through April, dogs are allowed on all beaches.
However there are restrictions during the summer on some beaches - see below for details.

Here the beaches are listed in approximate order of distance from the cottage.

  • Dunwich - dogs allowed all year round  Free car park.  The Flora Team Rooms (award winning fish and chips, Mar-Nov).  The Ship Inn serves good pub grub and welcomes dogs; in winter, a fabulous, friendly place to warm up (and to dry out the dog) after being on the beach. Nice garden.
  • Minsmere - most of the beach is open to dogs all year round.  Sand and shingle. Parking charge for non-members of the National Trust. Shop, cafe.
  • Walberswick - no restictions on dogs. Big, mainly sand. Cheap/free parking.
  • Leiston (Sizewell) - a fantastic stretch of wild, usually deserted coastline with no dog
restrictions and a small cafe with outside seating. Mainly shingle. Very cheap parking.
  • Southwold - dogs only welcome to main beach Oct-April, but they're allowed all year round on the beach a little north of the pier, where you can get fish and chips to eat on the beach.  Mainly sand. Several pubs welcome dogs, including the Red Lion on South Green (follow the main street south until it you reach a large open green; log fire in winter).
  • Aldeburgh - restricted in summer, but there's a mile of dog-friendly beach just to the north of the centre. Mainly shingle. Lots of nice pubs, including a dog-friendly one next to the Moot Hall.
  • Kessingland (just south of Lowestoft) - a HUGE, unspoilt beach that's a combination of marshland, shingle and sand. A restaurant with a terrace outside, and a dog-friendly pub.
  • Lowestoft - mainly sand.  Summer restrictions, but the beach of Gunton Denes is dog-friendly, and is signposted off the B1385, north of Lowestoft.

These details are provided to help you, but please do check local signs when you visit, in case of changes to where and when dogs are allowed.
